They can plug in easily to an OBDII, but I think they look really tacky on anything that isn’t a race car. But it might be worthwhile for any car if you do a lot of track days and don’t mind spending ~$1,300 on it. Also if you’re doing track days with a mind towards actual racing, it’s be easy to swap it into a race car when you get one.

That’s what I meant by a car that’s worth it. Like a TT gallardo or something engine swapped.

You don’t even need something super exotic like that. My car uses a nearly stock Honda Fit engine. If you track something as exotic as a Mazda 2 often enough and you want to improve your driving, a data logger would be a useful tool.
To someone who owns a 1750HP Gallardo and does a lot of track days I’d say stop being a pussy, buy a Formula Atlantic and go racing for real. :D

Haha the TT Lambos would be for drag racing lol! But I see what you mean and I agree, you gotta gauge like that in your honda?

Haha then I’d say going fast gets a lot more interesting when you have to go around corners. :P
That is my Honda! It’s a Formula Ford chassis with the Honda Fit engine allowed by the SCCA. ~120mph in a straight line but it corners at over 1G. There’s no aero but slick tires and only 1100lbs help.

I’m guessing you have a special license to drive/compete in one of those?
I’d love to get into grassroots racing like that, lightweight and proper race tires must be such a fun combo. I guess aero only comes into play with more experience and much faster cars?

Non-racing track day programs usually have a progression from novice (with an instructor in the car) to advanced, but if you wanted to go straight into racing you can either go to a racing school like Skip Barber, Bertil Roos, or the new Lucas Oil School of Racing. After 2 or 3 days you’ll be able to apply for a racing license with any road racing organization. The SCCA or NASA (National Auto Sport Association) have school programs that are cheaper, but you need to either have your own car or know someone willing to lend you theirs.
For open wheel cars, the Formula Ford (also known as Formula 1600 for the 1.5 or 1.6L engines) don’t have wings. Their bigger brothers in the Formula 2000 class do (same chassis but with a 2L engine and wings) as well as other higher classes like Formula Atlantic, Indy Lights, Formula 3, etc. They’re actually easier to drive because they have more grip at higher speeds, but it’s tricky to find the limit because theoretically the faster you go the more grip you have, until you don’t.

This is quite informative, thanks! But I’m in Ontario so I’m not sure if some of (or any of) those are available here. I would really like to start karting tho, but when I hopefully have more money.
